The Apprenticeship is the origin story, the season where both light and shadow are planted.

From childhood through his early twenties, it traces Mike’s formative years shaped by dyslexia, ADHD, early shame, rejection, and the instinct to mimic others in order to belong. Overlooked and underestimated, he begins learning the power of masks, control, and performance, while early addiction patterns, weed, alcohol, compulsive spending, emerge as coping rather than rebellion.

Alongside the struggle, unexpected mentors appear: a stepfather who teaches him how to think, a mill boss who introduces Jesus as accountability rather than dogma, and books that quietly reshape his worldview.

The book closes with a defining wilderness moment, a solitary mountain prayer, where a young man, still becoming, surrenders for the first time, planting the seed of redemption long before he knows how badly he’ll need it.

WHEN SURVIVAL BECOMES A MASK - BOOK EXCERPT

No one is born into the world already marked by the shadows they will one day cast. The descent into a gray man persona is gradual, almost invisible, like a thick fog settling between the cracks of memory and longing. It is not a single leap, but a patient accumulation, one false belief, then another, each finding its root in the bruised soil of a troubled childhood.
 
It is in the tender places left by old wounds that the deceptive cycle begins to churn, silently at first, with the faintest of betrayals: a trust lost here, a lesson hard-learned there. From such lessons, a child learns not to trust but to survive. And if that child is clever, or only desperate, survival becomes a kind of masquerade, a way of slipping unnoticed through the hazards of adolescence.
